The Reserve Financial institution of India (RBI) introduced on Friday that over 97% of India’s highest-denomination 2,000-rupee forex notes, which have been withdrawn from circulation in Might 2023, have been returned.

The overall worth of two,000 rupee banknotes in circulation, which stood at 3.56 lakh crore rupees as on Might 19, 2023, when the withdrawal of India’s highest forex word was introduced, has now decreased to eight,470 crore rupees as of February 29, 2024, the RBI mentioned in a press release.

“Thus, 97.62% of the ₹2000 banknotes in circulation as on Might 19, 2023, has since been returned,” the central financial institution mentioned.

Nonetheless, the tempo of return of the two,000 rupee word appears to be modest as RBI had reported earlier that it had acquired 97.26% of those notes as on November 30, 2023.

The RBI reiterated that the two,000 rupee word stays legally legitimate tender.

The two,000 rupee word was launched in November 2016 to deal with money wants following the Modi-governments demonetisation transfer after they scrapped of 500 and 1,000 notes as authorized tenders. Printing of the two,000 rupee word ceased in 2018-19 as soon as a ample provide of notes in different denominations turned out there. The RBI, noting restricted utilization of two,000 rupee notes in transactions and in keeping with its ‘Clear Observe Coverage,’ opted to withdraw the notes from circulation.
