The Union Cupboard on Friday accredited a scheme to distribute fortified rice below authorities programmes which was introduced by the Prime Minister in his Independence Day speech.

Your entire value of rice fortification – round Rs 2,700 crore every year – could be borne by the federal government of India as a part of meals subsidy until its full implementation upto June, 2024. That is lower than 2% of nationwide meals subsidy.

The distribution will occur all through the Focused Public Distribution System (TPDS) in three phases below Meals Safety Act (NFSA), Built-in Little one Improvement Providers (ICDS), Pradhan Mantri Poshan Shakti Nirman-PM POSHAN [erstwhile Mid-Day Meal Scheme (MDM)] and Different Welfare Schemes (OWS) of Authorities of India in all States and Union Territories (UTs) by 2024 in a phased method.

The Meals Company of India (FCI) and state businesses are already engaged in procurement of fortified rice and to this point almost 88.65 LMT of fortified rice has been procured for the provision and distribution.

Earlier, the scheme sponsored by the federal government of India on “Fortification of Rice and its Distribution below Public Distribution System” was carried out for 3 years starting from 2019-20, in 11 states Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Chhattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Jharkhand efficiently distributed the fortified rice of their recognized districts (one district per State) below the pilot scheme.
